Good value with academic pricing

As a student, I was looking for the best deal on professional PCB software. I got an Altium Designer academic license. The discount was significant, making it affordable for my budget. The process for verifying my student status was a bit slow, taking about 3 business days, but once approved, the license came through quickly. For the features it offers, especially the schematic capture and simulation, it feels like I got a really good deal. Definitely worth the investment for my studies.

Altium 365 for team collaboration

Our team opted for Altium 365 to improve our design collaboration, specifically for a multi-board assembly project. The ordering process was handled by our account manager, who was very responsive. The biggest benefit has been the cloud-based sharing; it made reviewing designs and managing components much smoother across different locations. We used the ECAD MCAD Co-design features extensively, and they worked well for syncing our mechanical and electrical teams. There was a small hiccup with a file sync early on, but their support chat resolved it quickly. It's a powerful tool, definitely streamlining our workflow compared to our old system.

Good features, some learning curve

I purchased Altium Designer for a new project. The feature set is really impressive, especially the integrated simulation tools which saved me a lot of time. Delivery was just getting the license key, which was quick, but it took a bit to get everything set up and understand the workflow. Customer service was helpful when I called about a licensing issue, but I had to wait on hold for a while. Overall, a solid product, just be ready to dedicate some time to learning it if you're new to the platform.

Love Altium Designer!

I got Altium Designer for my personal projects and it's fantastic! The PCB layout tool is so intuitive and everything just clicks. I finished my first design way faster than I thought I would. The online resources for learning were super helpful too. I'm already planning my next project and can't wait to use it again. Will tell all my colleagues about this!

Is there a good time of year to grab Altium? Like black friday or something?

S Sam Bennett 2 months ago
Yeah, I remember seeing some decent offers around Black Friday last year. Also heard Q4 sometimes has budget clearance sales.

They definitely do Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. Also, if you're a student or part of a startup, check out their specific programs on their site, those are usually available year-round and can be pretty sweet discounts.

I'm thinking about getting Altium for my team. Does anyone know how their team licensing works, or if there's a discount for multiple seats?

K Kate Silva 2 months ago
They definitely have multi-seat license discounts. You'd probably want to talk to one of their reps though, it's not like a simple coupon code you just punch in.

My company got a multi-seat license a couple years ago. It's more of a direct sales quote situation than just applying a promo. They usually work with you on pricing based on how many licenses you need.

Does altium designer work on mac or is it windows only?

N Neil 3 months ago
Windows only, afaik. Most serious EDA software is.

C Chris Patel 2 months ago
It's Windows native. You can run it on a Mac with Parallels or Boot Camp if you really need to, but it's not officially supported on macOS directly.

How does Altium stack up against something like KiCad or Eagle? Worth the extra cost?

G Gwen F. 2 months ago
Totally depends on what you're doing. For hobby stuff or really small projects, KiCad is fine and free. But for professional work, especially if you need good collaboration features and advanced routing, Altium blows them out of the water.

I switched from Eagle years ago. The learning curve was there, but the features for manufacturing output and supply chain integration are just so much better with Altium. Plus, 365 is a game changer for team projects.
